Fox's Rainbow DNA

One deck, two modes, and ten cards that decide which

← back to all decks

The Thesis

Every Eeveelution ex in Prismatic Evolutions is a Stage 1 that evolves from Eevee. Not from Flareon, not from Umbreon. From Eevee. One Basic turns into whichever of eight answers the board needs, and that is the whole deck.

That fact is worth stating loudly because it caused an argument at the table. There is no "base Flareon" to find. There cannot be: the only non-ex Flareon ever printed is Prismatic Evolutions 013, it carries Regulation G, and it rotated out in April 2026. Playing Eevee straight into Flareon ex was never a house rule. It is the card working as printed.

Rainbow DNA exists for a narrower reason. "Eevee ex" is a different card name from "Eevee", so by default nothing can be played on top of it at all. Rainbow DNA is the permission slip that lets Eevee ex become an Eeveelution ex. It reads "any Pokémon ex that evolves from Eevee," so the one line that genuinely is illegal is Eevee ex into a non-ex Eeveelution. Only a plain Eevee can do that.

The keystone is the ACE SPEC

That parenthetical is what makes this deck possible. It reduces coloured requirements, not just Colorless. Every one of the big "gem" attacks needs Lightning or Grass, and Fox plays neither:

Gem attackPrinted costPayable from his colours
Flareon ex Carnelian 280FireWaterLightningR + W
Umbreon ex Onyx, takes a PrizeLightningPsychicDarknessP + D
Espeon ex Amazez, devolves their boardGrassPsychicDarknessP + D
Glaceon ex EuclaseGrassWaterDarknessW + D

One Crystal, one Pokémon, so he picks one gem per game. And the best line in the deck is not a gem at all. Flareon ex holding the Crystal casts Burning Charge for a single Fire: 130 damage, and search the deck for two Basic Energy of any types. That is the engine and the attacker in one card, and it happens to be his favourite Pokémon.

19 + 28 + 13 = 60.

Basics: 10 (4 Eevee, 2 Eevee ex, 4 Hoothoot). Eight of the ten sit under Buddy-Buddy Poffin's 70 HP cap; Eevee ex is the exception at 200.

The Swap

Ten cards out, ten cards in. Everything else stays exactly where it is.

That lands Fire and Ice on 20 Pokémon, 27 Trainers, 13 Energy, also 60.

What actually moves is Energy first, Pokémon second, and one Trainer each way. Every Supporter is shared. The whole draw engine is shared. The ACE SPEC is shared. So the deck plays identically in both modes, which is the point: he learns one deck, not two.

Sun and Moon

Espeon is the Sun evolution and Umbreon is the Moon evolution. That is where the name comes from, and the pairing is aimed squarely at Dad's side of the table.

Umbreon ex is the reason this build exists. Every card in the lantern decks is Darkness Weakness ×2, top to bottom: Mega Chandelure ex, Gourgeist ex, Dusknoir, Litwick, Lampent, Pumpkaboo, Duskull. Moon Mirage does 160, which becomes 320. That one-shots Gourgeist ex at 270, Dusknoir at 160, and every small body on the board. Mega Chandelure ex survives at 350, but only by 30.

Espeon ex is a single copy doing a single job. Amazez devolves every evolved Pokémon the opponent controls, shuffling the top Stage card back into their deck. Against a board of Mega Chandelure ex, Dusknoir, Gengar, and Crobat ex that erases an entire game's setup in one attack. It costs GrassPsychicDarkness, which the Crystal turns into P and D, both of which this build already runs.

Espeon is Darkness Weakness ×2 and Dad's decks are full of Darkness attackers, so it dies the turn after it fires. That is a fair price for undoing his board, and it is why there is only one.

Battle Cage is the sleeper. Dad wins with damage counters placed by Abilities, and Tera bench-immunity does not stop those. Dusknoir's Cursed Blast puts 13 counters anywhere it likes; Froslass pings every Ability Pokémon each Checkup. Battle Cage prevents damage counters being placed on Benched Pokémon by the opponent's attacks and Abilities. Fox places no counters at all, so a card that reads as symmetric is entirely one-sided in his favour.

Fire and Ice

Flareon and Glaceon, built for a field of strangers rather than for Dad.

Flareon ex is the haymaker. Carnelian does 280, and Mega Excadrill ex is Metal, which means 280 doubles to 560 into its 340 HP. Mega Excadrill is the most-played deck in the format. Fox's favourite Pokémon one-shots it, which is a nice thing to be able to tell him.

Fire also doubles into Mega Venusaur ex at 380, Dhelmise, and the Grass core of Festival Lead. Between them that is close to a fifth of the field.

Glaceon here is the non-ex print, and that is deliberate. Glaceon ex is Metal Weakness ×2, so it dies to the very Excadrill that Flareon beats. The plain Glaceon gives up one Prize instead of two, and Permeating Chill does 30 now plus 9 damage counters at the end of the opponent's next turn. That is 120 for a single Water, and counters ignore Weakness and Resistance entirely.

Giving up two Prizes for every knockout is this archetype's real weakness, and a 1-Prize attacker is the honest fix. It also keeps Fox's third-favourite Eeveelution in the deck without the liability.

Pick Your Ten

This part is for Fox.

Your deck is 50 cards that never change, plus 10 cards you choose. Pick before we start shuffling.

Playing Dad at home? Take Sun and Moon. Espeon and Umbreon. Umbreon hits his ghosts for double damage, which means almost everything he plays falls over twice as fast. Espeon has one job: use Amazez and send his big evolved Pokémon back into his deck. He will not be happy. The two Battle Cage stop him sneaking damage onto your Bench.

Going to game night? Take Fire and Ice. Flareon and Glaceon. Flareon's Carnelian hits for 280, and doubles to 560 against the metal Pokémon lots of people play, which knocks out almost anything in one shot. Glaceon is not an ex, so if it gets knocked out your opponent only takes one Prize instead of two. That matters more than it sounds like it does.

Either way, three things stay true. Flareon ex fetches your Energy with Burning Charge. Put Sparkling Crystal on whichever Pokémon you want to attack with, because it makes that attack cost one less Energy. And keep your Eeveelutions on the Bench until you need them, because Tera means nothing can touch them there.

Game Plans

1. The Bench Is Safe, So Wait

Every Eeveelution ex is Tera, which prevents all attack damage while it is Benched. The only Pokémon that can be knocked out is the one currently Active.

So the deck's real skill is patience. Build the Bench, hold Eevee ex undeclared, and only commit to Umbreon or Espeon once you know what you are looking at. Rotate with Switch and it is genuinely possible to go a long game losing one body.

The exception, and it matters at home: Tera does not stop damage counters placed by Abilities. That is what Battle Cage is for.

2. Flareon ex Pays for Everything

Burning Charge is not a fallback attack, it is the Energy engine. Every turn it hits for 130 and puts two more Energy on the board from the deck, which is why the exotic colours can sit at three copies each and still be findable.

Lead with it, keep it Active while the Bench fills, and let it fund whichever gem attack the game asks for.

3. Three Knockouts and It Is Over

Every ex here gives up 2 Prizes. Three knockouts and Fox has lost, which is a big change from a single-prize deck and the honest cost of the archetype.

Two mitigations. Tera keeps the Bench untouchable, so only sloppy rotation loses bodies. And in Fire and Ice, the non-ex Glaceon gives up one Prize rather than two, which is the only real structural fix available.

4. Choosing the Crystal's Home

One Sparkling Crystal, one Pokémon, and the choice is not obvious.

Decide by asking whether the game is a race or a grind. Races want it on Flareon; grinds want it on the gem.

What To Buy

Counts are the maximum across both modes, so one purchase covers Sun and Moon and Fire and Ice together. Flareon ex is listed at 4 because Fire and Ice wants the fourth; Umbreon ex at 3 because Sun and Moon wants the third.
